Welcome aboard Pekka – our new algorithm expert

Pekka Röyttä joined Spectral Engines Oy as of 17th October, in the position of Algorithm/Software Developer. Pekka will be responsible for developing smart algorithms for analysis of spectral data, calibration algorithms and calculation optimization. He will also work on developing user software and GUIs. Pekka’s education is Ph.D. Technology (Lappeenranta University of Technology, Finland). His previous position was a Scientist at Institute of High Performance Computing in Singapore. Pekka developed a multiphysics solver and machine learning methods for urban microclimate in Singapore. Pekka is located at our headquarters in Helsinki.

We shortly interviewed Pekka. Find Pekka’s first thoughts and expectations below!

You moved from Singapore back to Finland and started working at Spectral Engines. Why did you choose to apply for Spectral Engines?
I found the position interesting, challenging and relevant for my skill set. Spectral Engines seems to be fast growing international company where I’m able to utilize my knowledge very broadly. Furthermore, I felt this is the right time to come back to Finland. I’m sure this will improve the overall quality of my family's life.

What do you think about your work? What kind of strengths do you bring to Spectral Engines?
Lots of nice problems to be solved. Also, the applications are significant and meaningful. My strengths mainly lie in data handling, machine learning and in software production. It is great to develop and combine new calculation algorithms with these spectacular spectral sensors to bring intelligence for novel sensing applications.

There are several visions that the sensor demand is growing remarkably in the future. How important are the new smart algorithms in this development in your opinion?
I would think that the algorithms are absolutely necessary for the growth. The customer value comes from the increase in information. Sensors produce data and algorithms turn data into information. Modern algorithms combined with huge existing databases can squeeze out amazing amounts of data that can create unforeseen customer value.

In what kind of applications, you believe that these spectrometers become more common first, and what are biggest bottlenecks for faster development in your opinion?
What a tough question! Honestly, I see a lot of big business opportunities in future affordable and miniaturized sensors. But it is far too early to guess for me which is going to be the first killer application. That said, my bets are on the health and security side. But there are many others with high potential, for example energy efficiency.

How about your colleagues? How would you describe them?
My colleagues are highly motivated and genuinely enthusiastic to use spectral sensors to build products that will improve the quality of life for everyone. The atmosphere is good and I have been impressed how easy it has been to start in a new office. And what’s more important, I have seen everyone is committed and capable to deliver excellent products. This is also very important for me.

We welcome Pekka very warmly to strengthen our team of experts!
