New MEMS expert speeds up the development of future MEMS sensors

Spectral Engines has decided to strengthen its in-house MEMS expertise. Mari Laamanen joined Spectral Engines Oy 12th of June, in the position of Senior MEMS Specialist. Mari has extensive expertise of MEMS sensor technology including the development of various microsensors and MEMS devices, MEMS process integration, silicon and thin film technologies and materials science.  She used to work as a Research Scientist at VTT more than 10 years. Mari’s main responsibilities at Spectral Engines are related to MEMS development and collaboration with microelectronics

manufacturing partners. Mari’s education is Ph.D. (Aalto University, Finland) and she did her doctoral thesis on Micro- and Nanosciences. MEMS Fabry-Perot technology is Spectral Engines’ core competence and Mari’s comprehensive expertise will be very valuable in the future development.

Mari is very enthusiastic about joining the team. She was already involved in developing Spectral Engines’ technology at VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland. Spectral Engines' novel technology originates from years of research done at VTT. Mari says that “I found the position interesting, challenging and relevant for my competences. It is very interesting to see how many years of development work is now used in a full industrial-grade sensor. Spectral Engines is a fast-growing company where I’m able to utilize my knowledge very widely. I can take advantage of everything that I did at VTT with MEMS processes and

use my commercial knowledge in my new position as well.”

Spectral Engines has done remarkable investment into MEMS-based infrared sensor development. MEMS fabrication needs a deep understanding of MEMS process integration and thin film technologies, and Fabry-Perot interferometer technology has its own requirements. Spectral Engines spectral sensor development work has been done with several research and industrial manufacturing partners. The next generation manufacturing processes are under final tests and Mari’s role is to support the commercial production with selected MEMS foundry and electronics integration partners. This recruitment plays important role in Spectral Engines technology roadmap towards miniaturized and mass-producible sensor platforms.
